Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey says more field work was finished

The Oskaloosa Herald

DES MOINES

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey Monday commented on the Iowa Crops and Weather report released by the USDA National Agricultural Statistical Service. The report is released weekly from April through October.

“While some areas received more unneeded rain, much of the state experience sunny and warm weather this past week that allowed needed field work to continue,” Northey said. “Hopefully, the challenging weather and terrible flooding of earlier this month are behind us and farmers are able get back to growing crops and caring for their animals.”

The weekly report is also available on the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship’s Web site at www.IowaAgriculture.gov. The report follows here:

CROP RECOVERY UNDERWAY

Agricultural Summary: Steady fieldwork took place this week under sun and warm winds even as showers and thunderstorms surfaced sporadically across the state of Iowa. High winds and heavy rains in the western and central districts caused minor crop damage and isolated, additional flooding in fields that had been replanted. Otherwise, corn and soybean crops continued to recover from past weeks’ excessive rain and flooding.

There were 4.3 days suitable for fieldwork, compared to 5.8 days last year at this time. Topsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 1 percent short, 62 percent adequate and 37 percent surplus across the state. Subsoil moisture rated 0 percent very short, 0 percent short, 53 percent adequate and 47 percent surplus.

Field Crops Report: Corn condition rated 4 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 32 percent fair, 43 percent good and 10 percent excellent. Soybean planting is virtually complete. Soybeans are 92 percent emerged, which is 8 percentage points behind last year and the five-year average. Soybean condition rated 0 percent very poor, 11 percent poor, 33 percent fair, 45 percent good and 11 percent excellent. First cutting of alfalfa is 83 percent complete. Sixty-eight percent of the oat crop was at or beyond the heading stage and 8 percent was turning color, which is one week behind normal. Oats condition rated 2 percent very poor, 6 percent poor, 36 percent fair, 45 percent good and 11 percent excellent.

Livestock, Pasture and Range Report: Pasture and range condition rated 2 percent very poor, 5 percent poor, 27 percent fair, 51 percent good and 15 percent excellent.
