Bumper apple crop presents great opportunity for Fall fun
Iowa Ag Secretary encourages Iowans to get out to one of many orchards across the state

The Oskaloosa Herald

DES MOINES

Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey today said that apple growers all across the state are boasting of a bumper apple crop, and he encouraged Iowans to take advantage of the locally grown produce.

“The weather this year has been nearly ideal for apple production and growers around the state are reporting a plentiful, delectable crop,” Northey said. “The peak time to get fresh Iowa apples is now through the end of October, so now is the perfect time to get your hands on these fresh fruits.”

There are more than 7,500 varieties of apples grown in the world. About 2,500 varieties are grown in the United States with more than 25 different varieties grown in Iowa. Not all apples are the same, so don’t be afraid to try new varieties — you may just find a new favorite.

Besides being a delicious and nutritious snack, the health benefits may equal the taste for a reason to eat. Apples are an excellent source of vitamins and fiber. They are fat-free, sodium-free and cholesterol-free. Apples may even prove to be beneficial in preventing type II diabetes, fighting asthma, lung disease and several types of cancer. They are a rich source of mineral boron which promotes bone growth and may help strengthen and protect bones.

Now is peak apple season in Iowa. Many orchards offer festivals and you-pick opportunities for the family to get out and enjoy. Freshly picked apples can be stored for months if stored properly in a cool location.

“Visiting a local orchard and picking your own apples is a great family activity and a great way to show children the farms where our food comes from,” Northey said.
