These men in their business suits are recorded forever

The Oskaloosa Herald

In the 1960s, these men may be gathered together at the Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce. Maybe they met at the Chamber to plan for a membership drive or maybe they were members of the board of directors and got all dressed up in their business suits for their picture in the paper. One of the men shown here was able to identify and name most of them. Shown in the front row, left to right, was: Frank Randall, a farmer near Cedar; Russell Howard Jr., of the Mahaska State Bank; Charlie Gardner, of the Gardner’s Shoe Store; Cliff Dodson, Executive Director of the Oskaloosa Chamber of Commerce; Carroll Alsop, Alsop’s Department Store; middle row, left to right: Kermit Larson, Quality Oil Co.; Roger Sarver, United Food Market; Gus Gilderbloom, Bloom Builders; John Porter, of the Hawkeye Lumber Co.; next is a familiar face thought to be Richard Mickelson, of the Continental Mfg. Co.; top row: James Rielly, attorney; Keith Morris, Wilcox-Garland Furniture; and Jim Mathew, Mathew Lumber Co. Photos like these have appeared for many years for various organizations and events. Just think of the tons of pictures taken in Oskaloosa since the early beginnings of photography. The many pictures of clubs, organizations, churches and family groups multiplied by the many years would be a staggering number. If all of these pictures were stacked one on top of the other, they would reach, for sure, to the top of each one of our two water towers and to the top of our courthouse to boot.

— Chuck Russell
