Photo from the Chuck Russell Collection / The Oskaloosa Herald

Before bread truck came from distant cities

This picture was taken in 1895, according to information accompanying this Herald photo. The Imperial Bakery was located at 309 High Ave. W. (now part of the Penn Central Mall parking lot). Note the man at left standing at attention nearly out of waiting for this picture to be taken, as well. When photographers and photos were uncommon, a picture-taking was quite an attraction and drew quite a few unauthorized strangers. The tall man in the apron, with mustache, and with arms folded was William Kilpatrick, of Streator, Ill. He had purchased the Imperial Bakery in January of 1895. In the early 1900s, Mr. Kilpatrick a bakery at 212 First Ave. E. and called it the Bon Ton. The Bon Ton became famous for its quality bread and delicious pastries. Many will remember Roy Kilpatrick and his brother, Harold, who operated the bakery for many years. The Bon Ton closed their pie and pastry in 1973. Today, the only bakery remaining is Jaarsma’s Bakery. Today, many grown men, who in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s had morning paper routes will remember the Bon Ton being across the street from their paper office. Many paper boys would go to the alley door of the Bon Ton and rap a few times and usually Roy Kilpatrick would come to the door, invite you in and give you a donut or occasionally a damaged cream puff or cherry-filled long stick. At one time in the early 1900s, there were as many as four or five local bakeries. Many folks will remember other bakeries other than the Bon Ton. Do you remember Whyle’s, Remy’s or Grefe’s? In the 1930s, however, the bakeries slowly began to close when big bread trucks came in from distant cities. That’s life.

— Chuck Russell
