CHUCK RUSSELL
The Oskaloosa Herald

This picture was taken in the eastside yard of the Elk’s Building at the corner of South First Street and Second Avenue East. The year is about 1928 and is taken of the Oskaloosa Rotary Club of that year. There are very few pictures that ever identify the year, place or names of those show. Through a joint effort, many of the names have been identified. Top row: left to right, Ross Newman, unknown, F.A. Gillett, Dave Eckenbom, Frank McCormick, unknown, unknown, unknown, Harry Goodrich. Second row from the top: unknown, unknown, unknown, Irving Johnson, Dr. Merrill, unknown, unknown, unknown, Hazen Pettit, Art Spurgin. Third row from the top: unknown, unknown, I.W. Cook, Russell Hartman, unknown, Phil Hoffman (?), unknown, C.M. Porter, Gene Cheesman, unknown. Fourth row from the top: Ed Butler, unknown, unknown, Dr. Wray, Carl Johnson, Bill Reed, John Terrill, unknown. Bottom row: Art Walling, J.R. (Sandy) McGregor, unknown, Harley Riggs, unknown, Harold Tripplet (sp.?), Paul (Jake) Mathew. Over the years, Oskaloosa has had hundreds of clubs and organizations. Each club, organization, lodge, society and union tended to have a purpose of helping other people or in promoting civic causes in the community along with their own companionship goals. Those of you who might know some of these men are aware of the additional, individual good they did for our community. Our foremothers and forefathers of Mahaska County gave so much to today’s generation.
