TAINTOR
—
A grain bin collapsed in Taintor Friday morning and spilled about 100,000 bushels of corn, which forced the closure of two roadways.
Sully Co-op General Manager Jim Magnuson said the collapse occurred around 6 a.m. The bin was one of a cluster of bins located at the intersection of Diagonal and Richmond streets. The bin was next door to the Taintor Community Church, and the church driveway was sealed off with yellow tape. The spill also forced the closure of Galeston Avenue on the eastside of town and Miller Street on the northside of the community.
Magnuson said the 100,000-bushel grain spillage was minor.
“It’s a small amount really,” he said.
The general manager said clean-up operations will take a while.
“It’ll take several days,” Magnuson said. An outside contractor will conduct the clean-up, and the contractor will determine the time schedule.
Magnuson said the spill was a rare occurrence.
“We’ve never had this happen before,” he said.
A cause has yet to be determined.
“It’s way too early,” Magnuson said Friday morning. The insurance people had not been to the site yet, he added.
Magnuson stressed that people need to steer clear of the spill site for safety’s sake.
“We want people to stay away from the site,” he said. The site is “not inherently dangerous. ... We don’t want anyone to get hurt. Safety is the most important thing right now.”
