Question of the Week: What part of Super Bowl XLIV was better? The game or the commercials?

By DUANE NOLLEN
The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

An overwhelming majority of those readers who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Who will win Super Bowl XLIV? The Colts or the Saints? answered THE COLTS.

Fifteen — 75 percent — said THE COLTS while five — 25 percent — said THE SAINTS.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with the cultural spectacle of the Super Bowl.

The Super Bowl transcended the realm of being merely a big game to being a staple of pop culture years ago. Now most people block out about four hours of their lives to sit in front of the TV with their favorite food to watch football’s biggest spectacle. This year, companies are shelling out $2.5 million for a commercial spot during the game. Many non-sports fans watch the Super Bowl just to see the commercials. Also, big name music stars perform at halftime. This year, it’s The Who.

So, even if the game is mediocre, there’s still plenty to keep people entertained.

This year, some commercials created controversy. During a time of soaring budget deficits and a sluggish economy, the U.S. government spent $2.5 million on a U.S. Census commercial. Also, the conservative group Focus on the Family spent $2.5 million for a “Celebrate Family, Celebrate Life” commercial featuring the Florida Gators’ star quarterback Tim Tiebow.

But, if you’re a football fan, Peyton Manning and the Colts and Drew Brees and the Saints gave you plenty of entertainment.

So, was the game or the commercials more entertaining?

What do you think?

This week’s Question of the Week: What part of Super Bowl XLIV was better? The game or the commercials?

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
