Question of the Week: Will the across-the-board cut hurt Culver's re-election chances?

By DUANE NOLLEN

OSKALOOSA

By an overwhelming majority, those readers who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Do you think Halloween costumes are getting out of hand? answered YES.

Forty-one — 87.23 percent — answered YES while six — 12.77 percent said NO.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with the fallout from Gov. Chet Culver’s 10 percent across-the-board budget cut.

This past week, Culver made the state budget cut that will result in the elimination of more than 1,300 jobs. State agencies have until Oct. 28 to develop plans to meet the reduction.

The budget cut will trim $565 million from the current budget year. Also, there’s a projected shortfall of more than $900 million for the next fiscal year, the Associated Press reported.

Republicans argue that runaway spending during the past three years raised the state budget from $5.3 billion to $6.3 billion contributed to the situation the state finds itself today. Also, Republicans argue that employee pay and benefits could be reduced in order to prevent worker layoffs.

As the gubernatorial race heats up for 2010, will the budget cut and layoffs hurt Culver’s chances of re-election?

What do you think?

This week’s Question of the Week: Will the across-the-board cut hurt Culver’s re-election chances?

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
