The evening of July 11 will find the Oskaloosa city square encircled by small white sacks, each with a name or possibly a picture.

Shortly after dark, the small candle inside each sack will be lit as part of the ACS Relay for Life Luminaria Ceremony. It symbolizes a time to grieve for those we have lost, to reflect on our own cancer experience or that of those closest to us, and to find hope that tomorrow holds the promise of a cancer-free world. Luminarias also raise money for Relay with a $10 donation per sack.

You are encouraged to complete an order form in advance of the Relay. Forms may be found at area banks, Mahaska Health Partnership and in the Oskaloosa Herald.

As in past years, a luminaria will be lettered with the requested name and donor’s name as the forms are received. Prior to July 1, you also have the opportunity to personalize a luminaria — decorating the white paper sack as you wish. After completing a form and returning it with payment, sacks may be obtained at Mahaska Title at 121 High Ave. E. The decorated luminaria should be returned to Mahaska Title by July 1 for display at the Relay. Contact Cyndi Brown with questions at 673-6850.

The Relay for Life committee hopes to have the city square completely lined with luminaries this year — including the walkways leading into the center of the square to the bandstand — showing the commitment to finding a cure for cancer.
