Published January 22, 2010 09:14 am - Power outages persist in Mahaska County By ANDY GOODELL The Oskaloosa Herald OSKALOOSA — It’s still lights out for many Mahaska County residents.
Jamey Robinson, Mahaska County Emergency Management coordinator, said MidAmerican Energy crews expect power to be restored to all Mahaska County residents by 10 p.m. tonight. Approximately 1,000 homes in the county lost power because of Wednesday’s ice storm. The majority of these homes are in rural areas of the county. “There are a number of lines down,” said Robinson Thursday afternoon. “Southeast of New Sharon, for example, there’s four miles of line on the ground.” Robinson said Mahaska Health Partnership was among those without power Thursday morning. After reverting to generator power for a few hours, Robinson said the hospital’s power was back on just before 11:30 Thursday morning. Although MidAmerican crews are expected to work on restoring power throughout today, Robinson said rainy and windy conditions today could hinder their progress. In the meantime, Oskaloosa Nazarene Church, 1215 Third Ave. E., remains open as a warming center for those without power. Robinson said the Red Cross has set up at the church to assist those whose homes grow cold due to a lack of power. Additional precipitation this coming weekend is the main concern to focus on at this time, said Robinson. A strong storm originating out of California is expected to make it to the Oskaloosa area over the weekend.
