‘An Evening in the Isles’

OSKALOOSA

The theme for this year’s Oskaloosa High School Prom is “An Evening in the Isles.” Prom activities start at 5:30 p.m. Saturday with a promenade leading into the high school gym and end Sunday with an after-prom party at the Middle School.

Emory Stewart, guidance counselor and Student Council sponsor, said following the promenade a dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m., followed by live entertainment, a senior video tribute, prom dance and after-prom party.

Stewart said the senior video tribute is a DVD with highlights from the school year. The DVDs are sold for a nominal price.

“We take video clips of everything that goes on in the school all year long,” Stewart said. “And then just put a highlight video together for the seniors so they can remember their senior year.”

Molly Sterner, Oskaloosa High School Language Arts teacher, said the theme of the after-prom party is “On to the Boardwalk,” an offshoot of the prom’s island theme.

Sterner clicked off a long list of after-prom party activities, ranging from inflatable and carnival games, casino games like poker and blackjack, a money walk, a vintage photographer and game shows “Let’s Make A Deal” and “Deal Or No Deal.” Well-known magician Ben Ulin will perform at 3:30 a.m.

Students can expect lots of prizes, food and beverages, all with a boardwalk theme, Sterner said. At 4:30 a.m., the grand prize drawings will be held and students must be present to win.

The list of grand prizes include $100 cash prizes, various tickets and passes, coupons, photo packages and a futon. Sterner said local businesses have been generous with donations for the prize drawings.

She said the after-prom party is open to all Oskaloosa High School juniors and seniors, whether they attend the prom or not. Prom dates also are welcome and everything is free of charge to the students. Doors to the Oskaloosa Middle School, where the after-prom party will be held, will open at 12:30 a.m. and close at 1 a.m., allowing students time to change into casual clothes following the dinner and dance at the high school.

Sterner said approximately 285 students attended last year’s after-prom party. She said she expects the same number this year.
