After a closed-session Oskaloosa City Council meeting this past Saturday, Michael Schrock Jr. of Surprise, Ariz., was chosen as the new Oskaloosa city manager. The city manager position, currently being occupied in an interim fashion by City Attorney Randy DeGeest, was left vacant after former City Manager Brian James was fired in January. “Right now we’re communicating with him concerning an action plan to transition into the city manager position,” DeGeest explained. “He’ll communicate with me and the staff so he can hit the ground running.” DeGeest said Schrock is a highly qualified individual with a lot to offer the city manager position. “He’ll bring an energy and a sense of positive thinking,” said DeGeest. “He was a budget director in Surprise, Ariz., and is very knowledgeable about budgeting matters.” DeGeest, who has been interim city manager since Jan. 20, said handling the workload of his private law practice along with duties as interim city manager was a “greatful challenge.” “I was born and raised in Oskaloosa and have always worked to make Oskaloosa a better place to live in,” said DeGeest of the opportunity to act as city manager. “I’ve worked a lot of extra hours, coming in early and staying late to keep up on my personal work.” Schrock is slated to start working for Oskaloosa June 15. —————— Herald City Editor Andy Goodell can be reached at news2@oskyherald.com
