City-wide spring cleanup May 19-22

The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

The annual spring cleanup week in Oskaloosa has been set for the week of May 19. Spring cleanup week is offered by the city to pickup the large items residents cannot get rid of on their own or through their regular garbage hauler.

As with the previous cleanup days, pickup will be limited as to what will be picked up and when. The only items the city will pick up are furniture, appliances, hot water heaters, televisions, and other large, bulky items the garbage haulers will not take. The city will limit the number of appliances picked up at any residence to three. Appliances include washers, dryers, microwaves, refrigerators, hot water heaters and televisions. The city will not pick up any garbage bags, yard waste, paint cans, hazardous materials, construction debris or tires. Tires without rims may be taken to a designated area at the street shop at 804 South D St. from May 19 to May 23.

The city will be divided into four quadrants, with A Avenue and Market Street being the divisions of the quadrants. Pickup will be done in each quadrant for one day only. Items must be placed at the curbside by 7 a.m. on the day of pickup. Items not placed at the curb timely will not be picked up. Any items not picked up by the city will be the responsibility of the property owner or renter to remove and dispose of properly within 24 hours. No items should be put out for pickup until the day before your scheduled quadrant date.

On Monday, May 19, city crews will pick up the northwest quadrant of the city. On Tuesday, May 20, they will pick up the southwest quadrant. The southeast quadrant will be picked up on Wednesday, May 21, and the northeast quadrant on Thursday, May 22.

If you are uncertain about your pickup day or what items will be picked up, please call City Hall at 673-9431 or the Public Works Department at 673-6885.

Your garbage hauler will take most items people have to throw away. The city is only planning on picking up items the garbage hauler cannot take. If this program remains successful, the city may continue it in future years. This is an opportunity to do more to keep the community attractive.
