A 30-year-old Oskaloosa man facing multiple felony and misdemeanor charges will have three different court dates in the next two months.

Steven Wayne Shewry at his pretrial conference Thursday morning learned two cases would be tried on June 24. A pretrial conference for those two cases was scheduled for 9:30 a.m. June 13.

The charges from those two cases stem from incidents that occurred on Oct. 26 and include one count of attempted murder and four counts of willful injury, all felonies. The aggravated misdemeanor charges from that date include three counts of domestic abuse assault with intent, one count of failure to register as a sex offender and two counts of failure to comply with the state’s 2,000-foot sex offender residence restriction.

According to the Iowa Sex Offender Registry Web site, Shewry was convicted of sexual abuse, third degree, in Mahaska County on Jan. 21, 2000.

Judge Joel Yates Thursday morning granted a continuance request from Shewry’s attorney, Robert W. Conrad, for one of the criminal cases. Yates scheduled a pretrial conference for 9:30 a.m. July 18 with trial scheduled for July 29.

The criminal charges Shewry is accused of in this case stem from incidents that occurred on Oct. 16 and Dec. 16 and include kidnapping, first degree, sexual abuse, second degree, both felonies, and driving with license denied or revoked, a serious misdemeanor.

Conrad argued his private investigator needed more time to interview witnesses.

“I think in the interests of justice, in all practical purposes, we’re looking at least another six weeks,” Conrad said.

Shewry’s next court appearance is on May 20 for a pretrial conference for a Sept. 13 drunken driving charge, which is a serious misdemeanor.

During a Jan. 23 bond hearing, Judge James Q. Blomgren ordered Shewry to post a $125,000 cash or surety bail. On the drunken driving charge, Shewry was released on his own recognizance.
