Published July 18, 2008 10:11 am - Fair opens Monday at 4 p.m. By DUANE NOLLEN The Oskaloosa Herald OSKALOOSA — The Southern Iowa Fair begins Monday, and the fair board will “Open the Gates in 2008” for a week of family fun.
Besides the traditional 4-H and FFA animal shows and contests, there will be a gamut of entertainment ranging from concerts to races. The Southern Iowa Fair Board invites people to spend a vacation week at the fair. “We’re hoping with gas prices that people will spend their vacation here,” Southern Iowa Fair Office Manager Kelly Long said. “We’ve got a little bit for everyone.” New for this year, there are events such as a Monster Arm Wrestling Tournament on Saturday at 3 p.m. in the Free Stage. “They can sign up that day, just come around 2:30,” Long said. If you want a funny portrait of yourself, there will be a caricature artist at the fair from Wednesday through Saturday. Kira Layli Scott, of Ames, will have a tent on the fairgrounds and will create her art from 2 to 8 p.m. and from 12 to 6 p.m. Saturday. The fair also will have “Doggies of the Wild West” show from Wednesday through Saturday. It’s a “Western dog show type of thing,” Long said. The shows will be at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m., and the dogs will stroll at 2 p.m., she added. If you want to satisfy your sweet tooth, there will be a Cinnamon Roll Contest on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday. For those who crave raw horsepower, there will be two Draft Horse events at this year’s fair. A Draft Horse Show will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the antique area. Then on Sunday, a Draft Horse Obstacle Course and Pull will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the antique area. If you like dog races, they’re back this year. A dog race will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday west of the Free Stage, Long said. The fair will have a carnival midway on the grounds from Tuesday through Sunday. The carnival will open at 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and open at 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Wristband Day is Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m., Long said. The Southern Iowa Fair has several bands scheduled to play throughout the week. The Good Time Oldies Concert coincides with the Oldies Car Show Monday evening at 7 p.m.
