Oskaloosa Reserve Firefighter Calvin DeLacy uses sheers to remove the top a vehicle during an Oskaloosa Fire Department training exercise Thursday evening. Capt. David Christenson said during the extrication class firefighters used various tools and went over the various ways to open a vehicle. Airbags, side airbags, high-voltage lines in some hybrids and other dangers are why firefighters must know how to enter a wide variety of vehicles. “Doing it the proper way ensures the safety of the patients involved and also the rescuers,” Christenson said. The firefighters practiced on a vehicle donated by Ron Mitrisin, the owner of Ron’s Auto Salvage.
