King Candidate
Cody Adams
Age: 17
Address: 1019 Maywood Drive, Oskaloosa.
Parents: Penny and Jim Adams; Richard and Melissa Adams.
School: Oskaloosa High School.
School Activities: Marching band, concert band, jazz band, football and weight lifting.
Community Activities: William Penn Jazz Band, William Penn Concert Band, First Christian Church youth group, Mahaska Masters 4-H Club, shooting sports, 4-H and County Council.
Hobbies and Interests: Running, fishing, hunting, shooting, playing football, playing catch, lifting weights, chemistry, making people smile and playing my trombone.
Work Experience: Miscellaneous one-day jobs — stock boy, bailing hay, mowing and I was a STING for the sheriff’s department once.
Future Plans: Major in chemistry at ISU after graduating from Oskaloosa High School.

Queen Candidates
Jackie Lynn Veenstra
Age: 16 1/2
Address: 1765 210th St., Oskaloosa.
Parents: Bruce and Jeannene Veenstra.
School: Pella Christian High School.
School Activities: Choir, vocal solos, duets and trios; basketball; volleyball and track.
Community Activities: Jefferson-Go-Getters 4-H Club, First CRC Youth Group, mission trip — tornado victims, helped at Maple Ridge speaking and working with elderly, helped with coat drive for United Way.
Hobbies and Interests: Hang out with friends and family, play basketball with friends, four-wheeler riding, swimming and singing.
Work Experience: Many jobs — babysitting, helping my Dad (Veenstra Construction) drill and set poles, drive skid loader; 50/50 ticket girl at Southern Iowa Fairgrounds races; I have also helped some in the kitchen.
Future Plans: To play college basketball and become a cosmetologist.
Further information: Our youth group from church went to Jewel, Kan., to help with cleanup after a tornado. At one lady’s home that was completely destroyed, another girl and I found, on a piece of carpet out in a wheat field, a necklace that was on this lady’s list of 10 things she really would like to have back in her life. It was a Christmas gift from her husband. I felt so good to be able to help giver her something back after all she lost.

Jaime Williams
Age: 16
Address: 1959 Highway 102, New Sharon.
Parents: Curtis and Dee Williams.
School: North Mahaska High School.
School Activities: Softball, volleyball, basketball, track, marching band, concert band, color guard, choir, class representative for Student Council, Student Aide program and Random Acts of Kindness mayterm class.
Community Activities: Member of the New Sharon United Methodist Church, PROS youth group, RCYF youth group, TeenServe mission trip, One Heart Many Hands service project, Sunday School at the New Sharon United Methodist Church, Vacation Bible School volunteer, M&M Peppy Pals 4-H Club, and treasurer for the M&M Peppy Pals 4-H Club.
Hobbies and Interests: Playing sports, hanging out with family and friends, camping at the fair, helping with children’s activities, cook and baking, going to the races, babysitting and making new recipes for the fair.
Work Experience: Babysitting at the New Sharon First Christian Church, babysitting individual families and mowing yards for elderly people.
Future Plans: Finish high school, then go on to college and pursue a degree in elementary education or marketing.

Nakeesha Van Wyk
Age: 18

Parents: Robert and Alice Van Wyk.
School: Oskaloosa Senior High School.
School Activities: Marching band, cheerleading captain, varsity basketball, varsity track, member of the Orange Crew, FFA Chapter Sentinel, National Honor Society, Silver Cord Club and Senior High RCYF.
Community Activities: Door of Faith, teach Vacation Bible School and volunteering.
Hobbies and Interests: Reading, hanging out with my friends and family, listening to music, singing and playing my guitar.
Work Experience: V.G. Farms, Nunnikhoven Insurance, babysitting.
Future Plans: Attend ISU and attend the College of Business, then transfer to Human Resources to learn hotel management.
Further Information: I am the 2008 Toyota FFA Talent Show winner, for church I have done mission trips in Mississippi and Kentucky and sang for special music. I will be pledging at Iowa State in the fall. Currently, I am babysitting two children Monday through Thursday and work for V.G. Farms Friday and Saturday, and will be starting a new job at the Shoe Dept.

Ashley Kinkade
Age: 18

School Activities: FFA, International Thespian Society state representative, Troupe 228 Improv. Team, Student Council, StoryBook Players, drama, marching band, concert band, jazz band, National Honor Roll, Honor Roll, People Helping Lab, Peer Helping Lab, track and field, National Honor Society, School Board representative, honor band and Paint the Town.
Community Activities: 4-H (State Council member, Southeast Area President, County Council President) Oskaloosa First Church of the Nazarene Youth Group, SHIFT (Leighton Reformed Youth Group), Country Life Center, Relay for Life, George Daily Tech Crew, Art on the Square Crafts, 4-H Summer Day Camps, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Muscular Dystrophy Association (established by Fareway to raise money for children with MD) Church “bake and deliver days,” Church “Rake Days,” Clover Kids, Operation Military Kids, Red Cross Care Bags and William Penn Band.
Hobbies and Interests: I have a true passion for the 4-H program and the communications, leadership and life skills that it offers those who are involved. I love donating my time to increase involvement in the program. I also enjoy visiting the Country Life Center in Mahaska County with my dog and seeing the people there. I enjoy swimming in the pool with my friends and sitting around the bonfire in my pasture and listening/talking to friends. I enjoy being involved in dramatic performances from church plays to directing the Middle School’s first production this year.
Work Experience: In addition to volunteer work, I have been employed by Fareway Inc. in Oskaloosa for the past three years. There I am known as the “floater” because I am trained in every area of the store, but I mainly work as night manager and do office work. I am also employed at Bonanza Steak house for the summer and possibly longer to save money for college and the other expenses involved in going to college. During the Iowa State Fair this year, I plan to work as staff as well as volunteer my time again when I am not showing exhibits.
Future Plans: This fall I will be attending Central College in Pella and majoring in elementary education while playing in both the jazz and concert ensembles. After teaching for a few years, I will obtain my masters in education in order to become a guidance counselor. Sometime after I have finished school, I will start a family and return to the Oskaloosa area to raise children and have them involved in all of the wonderful things that this area has to offer, of course including the 4-H and FFA programs.

Devan Voss
Age: 18
Address: 18744 170th St, Eddyville.
Parent: Melody Voss
School: Eddyville-Blakesburg High School.
High School Activities: Football cheerleader, basketball cheerleader, marching band, concert band, boys track manager, Building and Trades house, jazz squad, dance class, FFA, JR Red Cross, National Honor Society, FCCLA, President, National Honor Roll, Who’s Who.
Community Activities: Food drive and Christmas Basket delivery, cleaned up a cemetery, put flags up for the Eddyville Cemetery, painted hall ways and classroom for the school, goodie boxes for graduates serving in the armed forces, Operation Christmas Child, farm safety, cleaned up highways, cleaned trees up on the cross country trail, cleaned sticks out of the yards in Eddyville that the ice storm left behind, painted the Southern Iowa Fairgrounds, sandbagged for our community and moved people out for the flood.
Hobbies and Interests: Dancing, cheerleading, building houses, building furniture, sewing, crochet, quilting, scrapbooks, working with flowers, farming and hanging out with friends.
Work Experience: Blue River Hybrids, work a corn plot; School, worked baseball concession stand; Voss Brothers Redo’s, construction and remolding; Brandt’s Truck Repair, parts girl; and taught dance classes for six years.
Future Plans: I’m going to start at Iowa School of Beauty Sept. 9, 2008. I’m going to take the cosmetology program and instructor’s training, this takes 3,100 hours to complete. Upon completion of this, I’m going to open my own shop and someday teach. I am going to get my associate of arts degree from Indian Hills Community College.
