Day of Caring Aug. 26

By DUANE NOLLEN

OSKALOOSA

The United Way of Mahaska County is providing people a chance to give back to the community by working on various projects on Aug. 26 for a Day of Caring.

“So far, we have close to 150 volunteers, which is amazing,” United Way Executive Director Jill Dursky said Thursday afternoon. “It’s a first-time thing. We’ll see how it goes this year. A lot of United Ways do this.”

Currently, there are 17 teams of volunteers as well as individuals to work on 24 projects around Oskaloosa, including one project in New Sharon.

“We still have projects coming in and volunteers coming in,” Dursky said.

The United Way will pair the volunteer teams with projects affiliated with local non-profit organizations and a few projects for elderly residents, she said.

Many of the tasks include painting, landscaping and organizing, Dursky said.

“We’re painting an entire house,” she added.

Also, there will be some projects that require specialized labor, such as installing storm doors, tree cutting and cement work, she said.

The Day of Caring is a full-day of volunteer work divided into a morning shift, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., and an afternoon shift, from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. A lunch will be held at noon for the volunteers.

Dursky said she is still looking for donations of materials and food for lunch. Anyone who is interested in donating to the Day of Caring can call Dursky at 673-6043.
