New Sharon City Council to hold on to property

By MICHAEL SCHAFFER
The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

The mayor and one council member were absent from the large oval oak table during the New Sharon City Council meeting Wednesday night.

Council member Larry Applegate led the meeting in the absence of Mayor Ed Davis, City Clerk Diane Brand said by telephone Thursday morning. Davis’ absence was due to his attention to his wife who had to be taken to the hospital.

Brand said the remaining council members voted against granting a Class C liquor license for Scooter’s Pub and Grub until the two owners, Sharon Dawley and Scott Farrington, had the business closer to being open.

“Only because they’re not, they’re not even up and running yet,” Brand said. “They don’t have their building finished.”

In other business, the council decided to hold off on selling a lot the city purchased from Pro Line. Brand said the city recently received an inquiry about the property located east of East End Park.

“They weren’t sure what they were going to do with it,” Brand said. “So right they’re just going to keep it.”

Lastly, Brand said Mahaska County sent the city a one-year property tax bill for $1,484 for the old Casey’s building at 707 S. Main St., which is now city property. According to the purchase agreement between Casey’s and the city, Casey’s is obliged to pay a portion of the property taxes. Brand said Casey’s promised to pay nine months worth, or three-quarters of the total.

Dianna Klinker was the council member who was absent for the meeting that lasted all of 40 minutes.
