A brigade of volunteers fanned out across Oskaloosa Tuesday morning and afternoon wearing the white “Live United” T-shirts for the first ever United Way of Mahaska County 2008 Day of Caring.
A team of 11 from ITW Industrial Fastening was busy scraping and painting the outside of Mary McBride’s house at 320 N. G St.
“This is great for us to be able to come out into the community and help out somebody,” ITW Production Supervisor Glenda Paulson said.
With new paint donated by United Way came the possibility of new flowers, as ITW employee Kris DeJong made a call to the local Earl May store. DeJong said the owner sounded receptive to the idea that wasn’t listed as part of the work planned for McBride’s house.
The owner said the work being done to her house was exciting.
“And I went out and walked around to see the paint job and they’re doing really good,” McBride said.
The 73-year-old McBride has lived at 320 N. G St. since 1989, she said.
Just down the street, a crew of five from Musco Sports Lighting was busy at a house at 211 B Ave. W., owned by Fern Hegwood.
Jesse Greenhalgh, an eight-year Musco employee, said Musco Sports Lighting donated all the materials for the project. He said they planned to install a new garage door, a screen door, stairs, and two interior doors and patch the roof.
“That’s our punch list for the day,” Greenhalgh said. “And if we get some more time we may do some other things if we get a chance to.”
All told, approximately 200 volunteered to work on 40 different projects around town, said United Way of Mahaska County Executive Director Jill Dursky.
“We’re just thrilled with the outpouring from the community,” Dursky said. “Other United Ways say that for your first year, to plan on 30 to 50 volunteers. And I think we’re going to hit 200. So it’s just incredible. Our community is just so caring.”
Other Oskaloosa companies on the official 2008 Day of Caring list allowing their employees to volunteer included Mahaska Title, with six, First National Bank Midwest, with eight, the Oskaloosa Herald, with five, Bank Iowa, with two, Oskaloosa Area Chamber, with two, Edward Jones/Austin Norris, with six, Trolley of the Arts, with one, SCICIL, with four, ArrowQuick Solutions, with eight, Iowa Legal Aid, with one, Hawkeye Real Estate, with nine, Principal Financial Group, with seven, Mahaska Health Partnership, with 24, MidWestOne Bank, with five, Mahaska County 4-H, with eight and Cargill Eddyville, with 19. All told, 38 Musco employees were listed as participating and several more not affiliated with an organization.
Activities ranged from painting to cleaning out gutters to yard work to small window and door installation.
