House moving the old fashion way

OSKALOOSA

Work crews with Mullett’s House Moving, from Milton, are in the process of moving the house at 107 Third Ave. W.

Enos Mullett, who co-owns the moving company along with his brother, Andy, said he wasn’t sure of the house’s new location, but he did know it was going three or four blocks to the west.

Enos, along with Willie, Jonas and Ira, are Amish and shun modernization. All four live near Milton and rely on Steve McGinnis, also of Milton, to get them to their job sites around the state.

McGinnis supplies the van and charges 75 cents per mile to make the approximate 150 mile round trip from Milton to Oskaloosa and back to Milton each day.

“And that’s how they get back and forth to work,” McGinnis said. “I’ve seen them do many, many jobs, just by hand. All with bars and rollers. I’ve worked with them the last two years and that’s all they do.”

The only sign of modernization at the moving site on Third Avenue West Wednesday afternoon was a John Deere forklift, which was rented by the individual paying to have the white, one-story house moved, McGinnis said. If all goes as planned, the house should be on the road sometime Monday morning for its new location.

By Wednesday afternoon, the house had been rolled off its foundation and the movers were preparing to place axles underneath for transport, McGinnis said. Mullett and his crew arrived on Monday.

The large timbers used to stabilize the house during the moving process come from the railroad, McGinnis said. The shorter pieces one worker called cribbing and the longer ones — perhaps up to 30 feet in length — are called track beams. These are hauled from job site to job site by a semi.
