October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month By DUANE NOLLEN The Oskaloosa Herald OSKALOOSA — Crisis Intervention Services staff placed purple ribbons on trees at Edmundson Park Thursday morning to help raise awareness of domestic violence.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and CIS staffers decorated Oskaloosa’s city square Monday evening with purple ribbons and did the same at Edmundson Park Thursday. CIS Development Coordinator Kathy Rothfus said the idea of placing purple ribbons around town is to promote awareness. “It is a prominent issue,” she said. “Crisis Intervention Services is here to do something about it.” Locally, CIS serves more than 500 domestic violence victims per year and sheltered about 150 women, said Crystal Sodak, of Crisis Intervention Services. The Oskaloosa CIS office serves a four-county area: Mahaska, Lucas, Marion and Keokuk, she added. CIS offers services such as shelter, transitional housing, counseling, financial assistance, legal counseling, medical advocacy and community activities, Rothfus said. Besides hanging purple ribbons, there are several local businesses whose employees are wearing purple ribbons or purple T-shirts to commemorate Domestic Violence Awareness Month, Rothfus said. “The whole community is coming together to support this,” she said.
