OSKALOOSA

Incumbent Democratic state Rep. Eric Palmer defeated Republican challenger Danny Carroll Tuesday to retain his Iowa House District 75 seat in the Legislature.

Palmer won Mahaska County by a margin of 3,743 to 3,580. In 2006, Carroll had taken Mahaska County by a handful of votes but lost to Palmer in Poweshiek County.

When Palmer’s victory was announced in Mahaska County, Palmer checked on the voting in neighboring Poweshiek County.

“We’re doing very well up there,” he said.

Moments later, Carroll called Palmer and conceded the race.

“I’m surprised but very pleased,” Palmer said. “I’m grateful to the voters and their confidence in me.”

Palmer thanked his campaign manager, his family, and his volunteers and supporters for their efforts.

Carroll said he had lost Poweshiek County by 1,200 votes. He said absentee votes were decisive.

Carroll thanked his supporters for their efforts.

“I’m very pleased and honored with the support from Mahaska County,” he said. Carroll said that in all county precincts, except for Oskaloosa 1, his margin of support had improved from the last election.

Carroll said he still plans to be involved in politics.

“We’ll continue to work for the causes and values we believe in,” he said.
