Question of the Week: Are you satisfied with the job your state lawmakers did this year?

By DUANE NOLLEN
The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

By a 2-1 margin, those who answered this past week's Question of the Week: Do you plan to go 'green' this year? said NO.

Eleven - 31.43 percent - said YES while 24 - 68.57 percent - answered NO.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week's Question of the Week deals with this year's session of the Iowa Legislature.

The final gavel of the legislative year in Des Moines fell at 5:56 a.m. Sunday in the Iowa Senate. The state House adjourned at 5:04 a.m., the Associated Press reported.

The Legislature finished up a $715 million plan to pay for flood recovery and repairs to the state's infrastructure, the AP reported.

In all, lawmakers hammered out the details over a $6 billion state budget. Gov. Chet Culver wanted to spend $75 million more than legislative leaders, so they split the difference. Lawmakers agreed to a $715 million bonding package for infrastructure and flood repairs, according to the AP.

Although Democrats hold a 56-44 advantage in the House and 32-18 in the Senate, their efforts to overhaul the state's income tax system failed and a series of labor-backed bills also failed to pass. However, Democrats can say that they cut more than $270 million in state spending and crafted a balanced budget without raising taxes, the AP reported.

How did your lawmakers do this year?

What do you think?

This week's Question of the Week: Are you satisfied with the job your state lawmakers did this year?

People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
