QUESTION OF THE WEEK: Has the city achieved any of its long-range goals the council set in February of 2005?

The Oskaloosa Herald

OSKALOOSA

Nearly everyone who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Are oil companies unpatriotic price gougers? answered YES.

Only 7 — 9.46 percent — said NO while 67 — 90.54 percent — answered YES.

The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them.

This week’s Question of the Week deals with the goals the Oskaloosa City Council set in February of 2005.

The Oskaloosa City Council approved a list of long-range goals in February of 2005. Council members revisited the list during a goal-setting session in November of 2006, and, for the most part, left the list virtually unchanged.

The seven goals are all long-term and deal with issues like population growth and quality of life. The list of goals Oskaloosa City Council members adopted in 2005 and reaffirmed at a goal-setting session in November of 2006.

1). Oskaloosa’s population would increase by 500 to 1,000 and the city would be promoted as a sports and recreation center in southern Iowa.

2). City government would be fiscally sound with a manageable debt load, adequate resources, a growing tax base and a reasonable tax burden.

3). Oskaloosa would be known as a collaborative culture that supports cooperative efforts of all kinds and specifically consolidating and sharing local government services where appropriate.

4). Oskaloosa would attract new, good paying jobs in industrial and commercial sectors as well as in entrepreneurial enterprises and would support existing businesses.

5). Oskaloosa would be known as a family-friendly and quality of life community.

6). Oskaloosa would be a greener, more environmentally conscious community.

7). Oskaloosa would continue to enforce its role as a transportation hub for the region with infrastructure improvements — railroads, airports, highway and intermodal vision.

The seven long-range goals the council adopted in 2005 are three years and four months old. The goals allow the council a way to communicate to the community the direction they are taking the city.
