By DUANE NOLLEN The Oskaloosa Herald OSKALOOSA — The vote was close for this past week’s Question of the Week: Do you believe in ghosts? Twenty-seven — 45.76 percent — answered YES, THE TRUTH IS OUT THERE and 32 — 54.24 percent — said NO, IT’S IMAGINARY. The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them. This week’s Question of the Week deals with America’s image to the world. Rock band U2’s frontman Bono said that Tuesday’s election is an excellent opportunity to “relaunch Brand USA.” He said that during a Starbuck’s leadership conference in New Orleans. He was speaking about brands and what they stood for. He said that, in Starbuck’s case, their brand represents a place to gather and enjoy coffee, while a brand also can stand for social responsibility, the Associated Press reported. Does the United States need to relaunch our brand? Our world has changed since the terrorist attacks of 9/11. The United States has gone to war against terrorism in Afghanistan and then Iraq. Neither the Bush Doctrine of preemptive war nor its go-it-alone diplomacy has set well in many parts of the world. Many around the world also do not approve of our self-indulgence and consumer-driven culture. However, if there is a major natural disaster — such as the tsunami that devastated Southeast Asia in December 2004 — the United States is there to offer aid to victims. While the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have been long and bloody, the U.S. did free two nations from despotic rule. Is Bono right? What do you think? This week’s Question of the Week: Do we need to relaunch Brand USA? People can vote on The Herald’s Web site, oskaloosa.com, from Monday through noon on Friday. Then, votes will be tallied and published the following Monday.
