By DUANE NOLLEN The Oskaloosa Herald OSKALOOSA — By a more than 3-1 ratio, those people who answered this past week’s Question of the Week: Do you plan to travel for the holidays? said NO. Eleven — 22.45 percent — answered YES while 38 — 77.55 percent — said NO. The Question of the Week poll is not scientific and only reflects the opinions of those Internet users who have chosen to participate. The Question of the Week is just another way the Herald’s readers can voice their opinions about issues that affect them. This week’s Question of the Week deals with the Christmas shopping season. Thanksgiving is Thursday, so that means that Friday is the official start of the Christmas shopping season — “Black Friday.” The current economic climate — tightening credit, big layoffs and shrinking retirement funds — have many in the retail sector fretting about the upcoming Christmas shopping season. The Associated Press reports that many big retailers, such as J.C. Penney Co. and Wal-Mart, are seeing people pay with cash or debit cards rather than credit cards. According to the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs Index, stores ranging from luxury retailers to consumer electronics chains are slashing prices up to 60 percent on new merchandise. Stores had the worst October sales in 39 years and are seeing weak sales in November, the AP reported.
