Published November 07, 2008 12:05 pm - Mahaska County Conservation Board events for November and December The Oskaloosa Herald OSKALOOSA — Coon Hunting Russell Wildlife Area Saturday, Nov. 8, 7:30 — 9:30 p.m. Come out to run the hounds. We’ll learn about different coon dog breeds, hunting equipment and competition hunts. We’ll be hiking cross country in the dark to follow the dogs as they chase and tree raccoons. Space is limited, so pre-registration is required for this event. Call the MCCB at (641) 673-9327 to sign up. For all ages. Snow Goose Migration Desoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge Saturday, Nov. 29, 7 a.m. — 8 p.m. Join the Mahaska County Naturalist for an all day excursion to Desoto Bend National Wildlife Refuge. In late November, snow geese, ducks and other waterfowl flock here by the tens of thousands. Hundreds of bald eagles can be seen, too. We’ll also have a chance to visit the museum which exhibits artifacts from the wreck of the 19th century steam boat, Bertrand. Cost is $20 and includes the bus trip and a box lunch. Bring along money for dinner — we’ll make a stop on the way back. The 20 passenger bus leaves from the Oskaloosa Courthouse at 7 a. m. Pre-register by calling the MCCB at (641) 673-9327. MCCB Annual Birdfood Giveaway Russell Wildlife Area Saturday, Dec. 13, 9 a.m. — 12 p.m. Bring your buckets out to the Conservation Center to get free cracked corn for birdfeeding. Each family will be limited to 10 gallons of cracked corn. We may also have ear corn for feeding squirrels. Information about bird feeding and bird houses will be available. Kids can make edible ornaments and help us decorate our outdoor Christmas tree for the birds. At 10:30 a.m. we’ll hike to the bird blind to see which birds have stayed in Iowa for the winter. This event is for all ages.
