The Oskaloosa boys soccer team traveled to Pella to take on Pella High on a beautiful night for soccer.
It was more than a beautiful night for the Indians as they downed the Little Dutch 2-1.
From the very beginning of the match, it was obvious that this was going to be a very competitive and hard-fought game.
The two teams battled back-and-forth with Pella getting numerous shots on goal early, but Indians goalkeeper Wiebe Goodyk was more than up to the task. All of the shots that Pella took were easily handled by Goodyk.
The two Osky strikers, Andrew Reed and Daniel Doll, kept the Pella defense busy as well. At about the 15-minute mark, Doll received a nice feed from Lucas Burns and beat the defense to put Oskaloosa ahead 1-0. That score held for the rest of the half and while both teams had good chances, no other goals were scored.
The second half opened with Oskaloosa playing very well defensively and really controlled the passing of Pella more effectively than they had been able to do in the first half.
However, with about 25 minutes left in the match, Pella striker Deckar Lynch hit a beautiful shot to the top left corner of the goal to tie the match up at 1.
Oskaloosa continued to challenge the Pella defense and goalie and after moving Doll up to striker with Caleb Doll and Reed all playing as strikers. Minutes later, Caleb Doll stole a Pella defender’s pass and beat the defense to drive the ball past the Pella goalie to put Osky ahead again with 15 minutes left in the match.
Oskaloosa continued to attack and almost scored two or three more goals. The Indians continued to pressure the defense of Pella and the game ended with an Oskaloosa win.
“The Oskaloosa defense played very well tonight with all the defensive players working very hard and keeping Osky in the game,” Oskaloosa coach Mark Doll said. “Special recognition needs to go to Lucas Burns, John Andersen, Daniel Doll, Austin Fender, Jordan Shrago, Tim Harned and Tim McHawes all playing well. One of the most notable differences in the Osky team from a year ago has been the vastly improved defense. The whole team has improved, but you cannot watch this team and not recognize that this defense has improved dramatically. “
Oskaloosa will host Knoxville tonight at Vennard College with the JV game starting at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity match beginning shortly before 7 p.m.. Oskaloosa’s record is now 2-6 and 2-3 in the LHC
