Published May 07, 2008 10:13 am - The Oskaloosa girls tennis team battled through Norwalk for a 7-4 win.

Oskaloosa netters beat Norwalk

NORWALK

Oskaloosa coach Jill Gray was a little bit concerned how her team would respond to playing Norwalk in a rescheduled tennis match after playing in the Little Hawkeye Conference Tournament the day before.

She did see a minor letdown, but the Indians won four of the five doubles matches on their way to a 7-4 win over the Warriors.

“This was a good win for us,” Gray said, “I was a little worried about a letdown after playing all day at conference yesterday (Monday) and I think that happened. (Laura) Tucker and (Hannah) Hedge lost to the same girls they defeated yesterday en route to a runner-up finish. I was happy with Tucker as she was able to regain her focus and win her singles match. The rest of our doubles (teams) played really well tonight.

“(Jessica) Harwood played a great singles match to get a dominating win. I thought Jennifer Vonk really grew a lot as a player tonight in her come from behind win. She lost that first set, but was able to dig down and pull out a win, I think earlier in the season she might have let that first set get to her.”

Recording wins in the junior varsity matches were Garcia, Kopeckova, McDowell, Childs, Hannah Farnsworth, Haley Dursky and Katlyn Lourens in singles and in doubles Farnsworth/Chapman, Logan Seaton/Dana Korrell, Dursky/Carley Wright, Lourens/Carolyn Thostenson and Catie Coon/Ashton Bergland.

Oskaloosa goes to Indianola Saturday for the first round to team regionals.
