Osky kickers close season with loss in substate quarters

PELLA

Oskaloosa fought hard on Saturday morning but came up just short and lost to South Tama 2-1 in a Class 1A substate quarterfinal matchup.

The first half was hard-fought with neither team getting many shots on goal and ended up 0-0.

Oskaloosa had a great opportunity to go up 1-0 on a corner kick, but John Andersen’s shot bounced around on the goal line but wouldn’t go in as a South Tama defender finally cleared the ball to save the goal.

In the second half, the struggle continued back and forth until with about 20 minutes left in the match, Oskaloosa goalkeeper Wiebe Goodyk went out to catch an easy ball, but was bumped by a teammate and the ball came loose. Lucas Burns tried to clear the ball, but the ball hit off another Oskaloosa defender and then hit a South Tama striker and the ball lazily rolled across the goal line as the Oskaloosa players raced back to try and save it.

About 5 minutes later, South Tama scored off two headers on a well played combination and there was nothing the Oskaloosa defense could do to save that goal.

Now down 2-0, Oskaloosa really stepped up the energy and began to get more chances than it had all game long. Andrew Reed, Daniel Doll and Caleb Doll all had excellent chances to score, but nothing would go in to the goal.

Finally, with about 4 minutes left in the game, Daniel Doll made a strong move to the goal and was taken down from behind by South Tama and was awarded a penalty kick. Doll buried the ball in the back of the net and Oskaloosa closed the score to a 2-1 deficit.

Less than 2 minutes later, Daniel Doll was again taken down after making a great move to get free in the penalty area for another shot, but no foul was called and the game ended shortly later as Oskaloosa came up just a little bit short.

“It was hard for us to lose this game, but everyone gave 100 percent and that really is all you can ask of your team,” Oskaloosa coach Mark Doll said. “I think that playing our sixth match in 12 days caught up with us and we just did not have the energy that we have normally played with today.

“However, as we look to next year, optimism is high as Osky returns all but four of the players off the current roster. Graduating seniors Daniel Doll, Austin Fender and Chris Farber, along with exchange student Julian Broszinski will be difficult to replace, but our team has great depth and we will be adding a new crop of freshman who have talent and bring a new excitement to the squad.”
