Tucker moves on to state tennis tourney OSKALOOSA — Although Oskaloosa’s Laura Tucker finished third at a regional tennis tournament last week, the senior will be advancing to next week’s state tournament May 29-30 in Ames
The Ottumwa girl that won it isn't going so Tucker moves into the runner-up spot. “It is always tough to come back and play after getting beaten in the semifinal round, but Laura discovered how important it is to keep fighting,” Oskaloosa coach Jill Gray said. “They play the match for third and fourth just in case the first- or second-place person cannot attend, but you never really hear of that happening. After losing a hard-fought semifinal round to Jennifer Palmer of Ottumwa Laura was a little discouraged. However, after dropping the first three games in set 1 Laura got back on track and was determined not to lose. She ended up losing that first set 4-6, but was gaining momentum. She took control of the second set and never looked back posting a 6-1 win and went on to easily win the third set also. “I think Laura displayed a great amount of determination and spirit in winning that match, she decided she didn’t want fourth place and that determination paid off for her resulting in a trip to the state tournament, as the regional champion from Ottumwa is unable to attend and that moves Laura up to the runner-up spot. “Laura is very deserving and qualified to play at the state tournament. She has played No. 1 for Oskaloosa for the past three years and has done that at a high level. She has a career singles record of 37-12 and 11 of those losses have come at the hands of state tournament qualifiers. Seven of those losses were to three girls who have placed in the top 5 at state. “I’m very excited that Laura will get an opportunity to play at state, she will represent Oskaloosa very well.”
