Oskaloosa has not had the luxury of being able to replace a player with another.
That’s because for the past few matches, the Indians have gone the “Iron Man” route — playing the same 11 players all the time.
They wore down in a 10-0 loss to Pella late last week and trailed Southeast Polk 4-0 at halftime.
Oskaloosa managed to score midway in the second half, but the Rams went on to the 7-1 non-conference victory Monday night at Vennard College.
The Indians got on the scoreboard in the 57th minute when a Southeast Polk defender kicked the ball to Oskaloosa’s Taylor Parks, who booted the ball past the Southeast Polk goalkeeper for the goal.
“Taylor had an excellent shot. I think she was as shocked as anybody else,” Oskaloosa coach Amanda Reynolds said. “She was trying to pound it out of there and shot it from the half-line. It was a beautiful shot, perfection so I’m glad she got that.”
The Rams got on the scoreboard early as they scored in the sixth minute of the match and added two more in the next 10 minutes.
They made it 4-0 on a goal in the 28th minute and took that four-goal cushion into intermission.
Southeast Polk got the first goal of the second half in the 47th minute then added a goal three minutes later for a 6-0 advantage.
The Rams’ final goal came with seven minutes remaining in the match for the final margin.
Reynolds said the team had a little more energy after playing three matches last week.
“After playing three games last week, it was good to have the weekend to recuperate from that and obviously low numbers and had some injuries, but they really picked it up during the first half,” she said. “They started playing their sides (ball to the sidelines) and making some runs, They played all out in the second half. They’re tired and they’re still out there giving 110 percent. You can’t ask for may more than that.”
The Indians travel to Centerville for another non-conference contest tonight.
