The Class 3A district final game between the No. 2 ranked Carlisle Wildcats and the Pella Little Dutch was all Carlisle. The Wildcats rode the three-hit pitching of Ben Rector and the power hitting of Mikey Hendrichs to a 6-0 win and advance to the substate final.
After the Little Dutch went 1-2-3 in the top of the first, the Wildcats struck with authority. Ryan Lister ripped a single to left and Hendrichs followed with a blast over the wall in center field for a 2-0 lead.
Although the Little Dutch could not score in the second they held the Wildcats to three and out. But in the third, the Pella defense came unraveled. A pair of hits by Lister and Kelly Kauzlarich and three Little Dutch errors produced two more runs.
Pella finally got its first hit in the top of the fourth when Tyler Knight hammered a double to the gap in right center. Knight was picked off to end any threat.
Carlisle added another run in the fourth on a base hit by James Flaws, an error and a sacrifice fly by Lister. The final Wildcat run came in the sixth on a hit by Flaws, a fielder’s choice and a double by Kyler Morgan.
Pella had a single by Bret Braafhart in the sixth and he was cut down stealing. Knight had a single in the seventh, but he was stranded by a pair of strikeouts to end the game.
Pella coach Matt Dunsbergen feels that the Wildcats will be a tough team to beat.
“They are a great team and well coached,” Dunsbergen said. “They have great team speed and are tough to keep off base. We tried to stay with them, but in a couple of innings we threw the ball around a little. When you can't score, you can't win.”
The Little Dutch finish a tough season at 4-25, but Dunsbergen looks for better things in the future.
“We lose nine seniors,” Dunsbergen said. “But our young teams have had winning records this summer and some of those kids will help us.”
