Indians, Trojans having similar seasons in 2008

OSKALOOSA

Oskaloosa and Fairfield have had very similar seasons on the football field in 2008 as they enter their Class 3A, District 5 contest Friday night.

The Indians (2-4, 2-2) have dropped their last two district games after winning their opening two contests. The Trojans (3-3, 1-3) have lost three of the last four outings.

Both squads have beaten Fort Madison and they have lost games with Williamsburg and Clear Creek-Amana.

This is an important game for both teams as they make the stretch run at the expanded playoffs.

Oskaloosa is alone in fourth place while Fairfield is tied with Washington and Keokuk for fifth. The defending 3A champion Chiefs blanked the Trojans 28-0 last week and the Indians fell to the Clippers 35-33.

Oskaloosa coach Darrell Schumacher doesn’t quite know how to figure out Fairfield and the teams head into the final third of the season.

“They are kind of hard to figure out,” he said. “Since they’ve been in district play, it’s been pretty tough for them. They only have four seniors out for football which is kind of unusual for a program like theirs. They’re starting a lot of young kids and I was surprised by the score last week as Keokuk really took it to them.

“I don’t know how to figure them out, but I do know coach (Mike Schenck) will have them ready to go because they always play us tough.”

The Trojans managed just 166 yards against the Chiefs, including only 49 yards rushing.

Sophomore quarterback Jordan Leazer completed just 8 of 25 passes for 117 yards against the Chiefs. For the season, Leazer has thrown for 787 yards and nine touchdowns on 68 of 130 passing.

He’s also the team’s leading rusher at 430 yards and has visited the end zone seven times.

Junior running back Austin Atwood is second on the team in rushing with 239 yards.

Sophomore receiver Lani Eversage has caught 11 passes for a team-best 327 yards while junior receiver Jake Dunbar has hauled in a team-leading 16 passes for 172 yards and three scores.

Despite being a team that runs the spread offense, Schumacher said the Trojans are a physical team.

“The No. 1 thing we have to stop is their running game,” he said. “A lot of times on first or second down, they will run the ball to try and get some yardage and if they have to throw it, fine.”
