Mahaska County Soccer Club finished another successful season by making a strong showing at the end of the year league tournament in Fairfield on Oct. 25.

The talented defense of Brandon and Amanda Keesling, Matt Strong, Adam Hammes, Ben Rurup, Zachary Harger, and goalkeeper Josh McDanel did an excellent job of denying the strong Albia team any goals. Their second game was a challenging game against Centerville, which ended in a 1-1 tie. Jakob Hartl had one goal and keeper Josh McDanel contributed seven saves. As the winner of their U14 bracket, the team then played the winners of the other U14 bracket, which happened to be another excellent Oskaloosa team, coached by Steve DeJong. The final score was 3-1, with great offensive playing by Christian Bambrook, Jakob Hartl and Ciara Conley scoring the goals. Josh McDanel also had three saves as goalkeeper in the first half and Zachery Harger contributed one save in the second half.

The U-14 co-ed team, coached by Steve De Jong, played three games winning the first two, which put the team in the finals versus U14WH. The first game was a win versus Fairfield with a score of 1-0. Scoring the lone goal for the team was Graeme Kuba. Excellent defense by the goalie, Skylar De Jong and the defenders, Kelsi Fuller, Colton Mitterer, Spencer De Jong, Callie Arnold, Samantha Stearns, Brett Ewing and Troy Else was instrumental in getting the shutout. The second game was a 3-1 win over Ottumwa. Scoring for Oskaloosa was Graeme Kuba, CC Stouwie, and Scottie Yang. The midfield play of Sarandyn Curtis, Skylar De Jong, and Spencer De Jong was a key part of the win. The goalie play of Callie Arnold was instrumental in holding the Ottumwa team to one goal. The last game was against the other U-14 team from Oskaloosa who won the game 3-1, with Graeme Kuba scoring the lone team goal.

The grand finale to MCSC’s fall season was the Adult League vs. U16/19 combined team game on Saturday, Nov. 1. The U16/U19 team (plus two guests and a borrowed adult) beat the adult league team by a final score of 9-1 under the lights on the William Penn game field. It was an excellent night for soccer and everyone had a great time! MCSC hopes that the adult league continues to grow so the program can be expanded. From first time players, to experienced coaches, to former players, to soccer moms and dads who want to learn more about the game, the adult league is a great way for soccer loving adults to get involved. Any adult interested in playing is encouraged to sign up! Please visit www.mahaskasoccer.com for Spring 2009 registration information for all leagues.
