The Oskaloosa football team helds its awards banquet Monday night at the high school cafeteria.
The Indians went 4-6 on the season, losing to Pella 61-14 in the Class 3A substate playoffs.
Earning all-district awards were Alex Sirovy, Wiebe Goodyk, Andrew Reed, Jon Eveland, Tye Sparks and Matt Bowie. Getting honorable mention recognition were Austin Blanchard, Kyle Ford, Drew Ruggles and Chris Kollasch.
Fifteen players and managers received all-district academic honors, which include Blanchard, Bowie, Eveland, Ford, Goodyk, Kollasch, Sirovy, Sparks, Blake Englehoven, Audrianna Glassford, Samantha Kendall, Jacob Niedermann, Adam Nimtz, Dan Reiman and Brad Vonk.
One coach was also recognized at the banquet. Oskaloosa assistant coach Mike Sterner was recently named Class 3A Assistant Coach of the Year.
A total of nine awards were given out and the captains for the 2009 season were also announced.
The first award handed out was the Brent Blanchard Award for the best running back. The award was first handed out in 2002 and Tye Sparks is the recipient for the second consective year, joining Dustin Veldhuizen as the only Oskaloosa player to achieve the honor. Veldhuizen, now at Central College, won the award in 2003 and 2004. Sparks led the team in rushing with 657 yards and scored nine touchdowns despite missing some games with injuries.
The Jim Peters Award was next and it goes to the best offensive lineman. Winning the award was Alex Sirovy.
The team’s best defensive players receive the Apache Awards and getting those awards were Kyle Ford, Andrew Reed and Chris Kollasch. Ford led the team in tackles with 106 and had five tackles for losses while Reed had 58 tackles and paced the team with seven interceptions, which is tied for fourth on the all-time list. Kollasch recorded 37 stops and had 11 tackles for losses to lead the team.
The Kenneth E. Henle Award for Academic Excellence was won by Blake Englehoven while the Dave Roepke Award for Commitment to Excellence went to Jacob Niedemann.
The Scout Team Player of the Year Award went to Brett Sams and Andrew Reed won the Special Teams Player of the Year Award.
Earning the Benz Award, which is believed to be the oldest continuous award presented in the state with the first one dating back to 1933, as the team’s Most Vaulable Player was Matt Bowie.
Bowie caught 13 passes for 197 yards and two scores. He averaged about 31 yards a punt and was in on 34 tackles.
Three players were named captains for the 2009 season and they are Austin Blanchard, Jon Eveland and Brad Vonk.
