Lady Statesmen earn first-ever bid to NAIA Nationals

DAVENPORT

The William Penn volleyball team avenged an earlier-season loss by dishing out the same treatment in a much bigger venue as the Lady Statesmen swept St. Ambrose 3-0 in the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament Finals Saturday.

Second-seeded Penn (26-14) defeated the top-seeded Queen Bees by scores of 25-22, 25-18, 25-18.

The Lady Statesmen, who were swept 3-0 by St. Ambrose back on Sept. 23, claimed both their first-ever MCC Tournament title as well as an automatic berth to their first-ever NAIA Volleyball National Championship appearance.

Penn now advances to the NAIA Volleyball National Championship Opening Round next Saturday. The team will meet Black Hills State (S.D.) in Spearfish, S.D.

The program’s 26th victory this season is the third most in a single season and the most since Penn won 29 matches in 1985 en route to a 29-10 record and a league crown.

Penn, winners of five in a row and 13 of its last 15 matches, simply dominated the championship match, owning a .316-.195 edge in hitting percentage.

The visitors did not come out strong, however, facing significant 15-8 and 18-13 deficits in the opening game before going on a 6-1 run to knot the score at 19-19.

The score remained tied at 20-20 and then the Lady Statesmen pulled away with five of the last seven points to take the 1-0 match lead.

Game two was extremely close early as the two teams shared the first 30 points to be tied 15-15. Penn then finished off a 6-0 run with five straight points to lead 20-15 and cruised to victory and the commanding 2-0 match lead.

The Lady Statesmen never trailed in the final game (just one tie at 1-1) and completed the sweep of the match and the sweep of the league titles after sharing the regular season crown with St. Ambrose at 6-2.

Four Penn players reached double figures in kills, headed by Emily Stanton with a match-high 12 kills.

Shantelle Brown and April Young each tallied 11 kills, while Morgan Bailey contributed 10 kills in addition to a match-high .450 hitting percentage (10 K, 1 E, 20 TA).

Brown did the most of her damage in the first (six kills) and third games (five kills), while Bailey was dominant in game two (seven kills).

Sheila Mercado tallied 44 assists in the victory, while Young and Sandra Silverahad two aces apiece.

Defensively, Silvera led Penn with 14 digs and Caitlin Hadden was next by recording 12 digs.
