SIGOURNEY

Sigourney jumped on Tri-County early and then held off a furious Trojan rally to take a 43-32 South Iowa Cedar League win Friday night.

Both teams did not shoot well, but the Lady Savages were able to make enough early shots to build a 10-2 lead in the first seven minutes on their way to a 43-32 victory.

A three-point bucket by Tri-County’s Gloria Steinke at the end of the first quarter allowed the Trojans to close the gap to 10-5 heading into the second stanza.

A pair of buckets by Eryn Utterback, one from three-point land, pushed the Sigourney lead to 21-10 midway through the second quarter. Baskets by Michaela Gretter and Stephani Atwood and a free throw by Atwood sent the Lady Savages into halftime with a 26-12 lead.

The game was pretty much decided in the first four minutes of the third period. Sigourney ripped off a 13-0 run to grab a 39-12 lead behind the inside play of Atwood and Carolyn Holm and a pair of outside buckets by Utterback.

The Trojans broke the run with a three point basket by Sami Kirkpatrick and a shot in the paint by Katie Clubb. Gretter answered with a perimeter shot to give the Lady Savages a 41-17 lead heading into the final frame.

At that point, the Sigourney shooting irons went stone cold and only Utterback could get a shot to fall in the fourth quarter. Meanwhile, the Trojans reeled off a 15-2 run in the final period, but it was too big a hill to climb as Sigourney wrapped up a 43-32 win.

Sigourney coach Jenny Hobbs was pleased with her team’s defense, but frustrated with the offense.

“We just tried to force the ball too much on offense,” Hobbs said. “When the shots wouldn’t fall we got frustrated. There is two ends of the court and tonight it was the defense that stood out. Our pressure took them out of their offense and we played with a lot of intensity. Our bench gave us some real intense minutes as well.”

Atwood was the lone Sigourney player in double digits with 12 points and she added 10 rebounds to her line. Kirkpatrick was the only Trojans in double figures with 10 points.

“We came out and threw the ball around like it was on fire,” Tri-County coach Shawn Welsh said. “We just couldn’t get shots off against their pressure. We did play much better in the fourth quarter and were able to make a run at them.”

The 5-0 Lady Savages will host Montezuma Monday night while the 2-3 Trojans will travel to HLV on Tuesday.
